Even Better the Second Time
Esthetician returns to the Yorkville School to expand her skills and advance her career
In 2006, then 22-year-old Amanda Chui was working in a salon in Yorkville and attending university. She enjoyed her job but wasn’t enjoying her studies, so she quit school and began working full-time.
The longer she worked in the salon, the more Amanda’s interest in and passion for what she was doing grew. She decided to pursue a career in esthetics, and her first choice for where to get her education became George Brown’s Yorkville School of Makeup and Esthetics – and not just because of its convenient proximity to work.
“The courses at George Brown fit perfectly with my work schedule,” Amanda says. “They also fit my budget, so I started attending part-time that same year.”
After completing the Esthetics Certificate, Amanda went back to work, but she would soon find her way back to the Yorkville School.
“I had a few friends at work who were medical estheticians, so I was hearing about it constantly, and it definitely piqued my interest,” she says. “I wanted courses that were focused and specific but still allowed me to work full-time. I checked the George Brown web site and discovered the school was offering a Medical Esthetics Certificate – and my decision was made. It was meant to be.”
A familiar experience
In 2009, Amanda returned to George Brown’s Yorkville campus to begin the Medical Esthetics Certificate. She was thrilled to discover the experience was just as she remembered it to be – the quality of instruction was still exceptional.
“The classes are small enough that I didn’t feel intimidated,” she says. “They’re also very detailed, yet there was always time for practical applications,” she says. “Best of all, the teachers really know their stuff, including the latest techniques.”

In addition to acquiring the knowledge, techniques and practical experience she would require for employment in the field, the certificate gave her something even more valuable.
“The certificate covered everything I needed to know to get a job, but, more importantly, it gave me the confidence to do the job,” Amanda says. “I trusted the teachers and learned to trust myself – and it definitely paid off.”
After completing the Medical Esthetics Certificate in March, Amanda began working at California Sun Spa in the Bloor West Village, a small spa with a staff of about 12 where she applies the full range of her George Brown training every day.
“We offer basic esthetics treatments such as manicures and pedicures, facials and waxing as well as medical treatments like lasers for hair removal, pigmentation, vasularities and acne,” Amanda says.
“Because this particular spa offers both basic and medical esthetics, I am using all of my education
from George Brown to the fullest. I couldn’t be happier.”
