Frequently Asked Questions about the Dental Assistant Level II Upgrade Certificate

Q: I'm a PDA who would like to complete the Dental Assistant Level II Upgrade Certificate. What do I need to do?

A: You will need to submit the following documentation to support your eligibility:

  • a copy of your academic transcript and diploma from a recognized dental assisting school
  • a letter from your dental employer stating your term of employment and position
  • the clinical pre-placement health form (The health form must be completed by your physician with the lab test results attached. An occupational health nurse reviews these documents. If something is missing, it will delay the medical clearance decision.)
  • documentation that you are HARP certified or have the George Brown Dental Office Radiography Certificate

Q: Where do I send the above documentation?

A: Please submit your documentation to

Deborah Clark

Q: If I complete the George Brown Dental Assistant Level II Upgrade Certificate, does this mean I don't need to write the National Dental Assisting Examination Board (NDAEB) certification exam?

A: No. All dental assistants wishing to perform intra-oral duties (Level II) in the province of Ontario are required to hold the NDAEB certificate.

Q: I completed my dental assisting education outside of Canada. Am I eligible to take the Dental Assistant Level II Upgrade Certificate program?

A: You must be a graduate from a recognized dental assisting school to be eligible to write the National Dental Assisting Examination Board (NDAEB) exam and take the Dental Assistant Level II Upgrade Certificate program. Before taking the program, internationally educated dental assistants (or internationally educated dentists who want Level II Dental Assistant certification) should submit their academic transcripts and course work documentation to the NDAEB for review of their eligibility. For more information, please see the NDAEB web site for details for international applicants.

Q: Where can I go if I have more questions?

A: For more information, call Karen Crawford at 416-415-5000, ext. 3198, or e-mail cecommunity@georgebrown.ca.
